Afua Richardson

Afua Njoki Richardson is an Eisner award-winning American illustrator, musician, and storyteller. She has employed her passions for almost three decades, bringing her unique experiences to everything she makes. By the time Afua began work on the Pilot season-winning series ” Genius” at Image / Top Cow’s, Richardson had lived an active life as a professional musician and vocalist. She’d traveled the world as a background singer opening for Alicia Keys, Outkast, John Legend, Parliament funkadelic. She Started in Br’er Soul, a three-man broadway show with The late Sir Melvin Van Peebles appearing on Soul train singing background for artist Urban Mystic and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon with Har Mar Superstar. Afua’s heart, however, belonged to comics. Her work with writer Roxanne Gay and Yona Harvey marked the first-ever African American team to pen a story for Marvel comics. She’s a recipient of the Nina Simone ‘ Strong gifted and black’ award for being one of the few black women to pencil ink and color comic for the big two. Her latest works in HBO’s Lovecraft country as the artist of Orithya Blue and the Teacher of the series’s lead Hippolyta earned her an on-screen shoutout in the Emmy award-winning series Finale. Afua’s unique style and cultural influences are seen and felt in her covers, color pallets, and stories. Her much-anticipated series, Aquarius the Book of Mer, will feature her writing, illustrations, and musical attributes woven into the pages. She is nicked named ‘ Docta Foo’ and the Jane of All Trades.
